The self-service concept brought shopping baskets, employee uniforms, and prices labeled on every item. The store offered more than 1,000 different products, four times as many as traditional stores at the time. The self-service concept was so new that Saunders had to advertise the idea in newspapers before opening the first store in 1916. Saunders believed that if customers could pick their own groceries, it would be a cheaper way to run a store and pass on savings to customers. Saunders noticed that the cost of groceries was high due to the number of employees needed to fulfill customer orders. Clarence Saunders, a Memphis businessman, came up with the idea for self-service grocery stores in 1916. Piggly Wiggly was the first self-service grocery store, revolutionizing the way we shop for food. Music is deeply ingrained in our daily lives, but so is modern self-service grocery stores. Next time I'm in Decatur, I'll have to check it out! It would appear that they have bought out another, smaller chain, and have taken over their locations. There are still two in the Atlanta area, one on Cleveland Ave and one in Decatur. They used a beautiful house on Ponce de Leon just off Clifton Rd near the Druid Hills Country Club for the Werthan house exteriors. We enjoyed standing around watching the filming. In the movie, they "dressed up" Sevananda Natural Foods store in Little Five Points on Inman Drive to be the Piggly Wiggly. They had a lemon frozen custard that was out of this world. We never shopped there, but they had a "frozen custard" concession. It closed down in the early to mid 50's, but I remember it with great affection. Yes, one Piggly Wiggly in Atlanta was actually on Ponce de Leon, just East of Piedmont Ave. Daisy Werthan shopped at "the Piggly Wiggly".
